Summary of Changes from Previous Version
Alternative Assessment
Alternative assessment was established as a phenomenon through the pivot to fully online examinations (OLX) as a result of COVID‐19 in 2020, as a strategy to mitigate potential risks around privacy and technology. Since then, UNE’s understanding of the online examinations landscape, along with our institutional capability, has matured considerably. While alternatives to OLX are still a required provision for accessibility, there is no longer a need for
large‐scale provision of alternative assessment. We can now set the expectation that OLX are a standard component of online learning at UNE, and the privacy and technical considerations are no different to that of any other component of our online learning ecosystem. Alternative assessment can now become one of the suite of assessment provisions available to students as Special Assessment.
Supplementary Assessment
Through a number of consultation rounds on the Assessment Policy, several issues have been identified with the current provisions for supplementary assessment. These issues cover both philosophical reasons for supplementary assessments as well as the practicalities of offering them.
Special Assessment
UNE has seen a significant increase in the volume of Special Assessment applications over the last two years, which has highlighted the need to develop more streamlined and efficient processes, simplified access to provisions and clearer definition of provisions.
Education Futures has a HEPPP‐funded project in progress to redesign and uplift the Special Assessment application and decision‐making processes that will address the first two aspects. Amending the Special Assessment provisions in policy will complement this work and address the third aspect to provide greater clarity, flexibility and definition of the provisions and support effective decision‐making.
Assessment Terminology
Assessment terminology is currently extremely variable, with a wide range of terms in use and no consistent terms or definitions in place to describe assessment tasks and practices. This has impacts in a number of areas that affect both students and staff. Establishing consistent assessment terminology has been identified as a priority to address these impacts.
