Research Data Management: Getting started

This guide provides an overview of research data management and teaches you how to store, cite and improve the discoverability of your data to give your research a boost.

What is Research Data Management?

Research data management refers to the process of organising, documenting and curating data at all stages of the research lifecycle.

All UNE researchers have responsibilities when it comes to managing research data. A well managed data set is a valuable research output that others can use to further their understanding of your work.

Please visit SOL:AR Module 5: Data Management for an overview of research data management best practice at UNE.

What are the benefits?

Managing and sharing your research data increases the impact of your research by:

  • Driving up citation counts by allowing others to cite your data in their own work
  • Giving you the credit you deserve for producing high-quality data sets
  • Allowing for the long-term preservation of data, so yourself and others can access and re-use it in future

Data management plan template and checklist

The template and checklist are available to guide you with the development of a data management plan to effectively manage your research data, at all stages of the research life cycle.

Both documents are based on current best practice principles identified in plans adopted by other Australian universities, the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and the UK Digital Curation Centre.
