Section 1 - Overview

(1) This procedure supports the Academic Dress Rule and prescribes the Academic Dress standards of the University and the procedures for the establishment of a new award colour.

Section 2 - Scope

(2) This procedure applies to:

1. all UNE Representatives, Students, Graduands and Graduates participating in graduation and presentation ceremonies of the University or in other events at which the wearing of Academic Dress is required or permitted; and
2. all UNE Representatives involved in the proposal of a new course.

Section 3 - Procedures

New Award Colour

(3) A Faculty may make an application in a new course proposal for a new award colour to be established where the proposed Course is a new discipline area.

(4) Unless there is a compelling case, the new award colour will be represented by one distinct new colour and shall not be a combination of more than two colours (including the University mandatory gold).

(5) Double Degrees (e.g. BA/LLB) are represented by the two sets of colours representing each degree and graduates of a double degree have the discretion to wear the degree colours of their choice (e.g. the BA or the LLB hood).

(6) Combined Degrees (e.g. BA/BSc) are represented by the disciplinary colour that forms the majority of the credit points contributing to that degree. Where there is an even division, the choice of award colour will be on the recommendation of the Head of School proposing the new course.

(7) The Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer or delegate, in reaching a decision on the proposal for a new award colour, shall consider the appropriateness or otherwise of the current groupings for the new award and the size of the proposed graduating cohorts that merits a commercially viable order of new academic dress.

Academic Dress Standards of the University

(8) The Chancellor will wear a black silk gown replete with gold ornaments, the yoke and facings trimmed with gold, and sleeves barred with gold; black velvet trencher cap with gold tassel, the cap edged with gold.

(9) The Deputy Chancellor will wear a robe similar to that worn by the Chancellor; a black silk gown with yoke and facings trimmed with gold and sleeves barred with gold; black velvet trencher cap with gold tassel, the cap edged with gold.

(10) The Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer will wear a robe and trencher similar to that worn by the Chancellor but trimmed with silver instead of gold.

(11) A Member of the Council will wear the robes of her or his award or a black gown of the description worn by graduates holding the degree of Master, with hood of black cloth lined throughout with gold silk (BCC 114); black cloth trencher cap with gold tassel.

(12) The Esquire Bedell will wear the robes of her or his award or black Cambridge gown for the degree of Master, with a hood of gold cloth of the Cambridge doctorate pattern lined throughout with blue silk (BCC 162) and edged with red (BCC 210) and green (BCC 25) silk and black cloth trencher cap with gold tassel.

(13) A Fellow of the University will wear a black Cambridge gown for the degree of Bachelor, with a gold silk stole (BCC 114) of width 12.5 cm and total length 2.5 m, edged to a depth of 2 cm with green silk (BCC 25), with the shield of the University emblazoned on the left hand panel 150 cm above the end and black cloth trencher cap.

(14) Doctor:

1. Festal Gown of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge doctorate pattern faced with silk the colour or colours of the degree with a narrow edging of gold silk (BCC 114); hood of scarlet cloth lined throughout with silk the colour or colours of the degree and edged to a depth of 5 cm with gold silk (BCC 114); black velvet bonnet with gold cord.
2. Where two colours are named, the 10 cm single facing on the gown is replaced by two 5 cm facings. The first colour is nearest to the centre of the body and the second to the edging of gold. The sleeves are lined with the first colour and edged with a 5 cm band of the second. The hood is lined with the first and edged 5 cm with the second; the latter edging is inside the hood only and lies inside the gold.

(15) A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), a Festal Gown of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge doctorate pattern faced with white silk with a narrow edging of gold silk (BCC 114); hood of scarlet cloth lined throughout with white silk and edged to a depth of 5 cm with gold silk (BCC 114); black velvet bonnet with black cord.

(16) Master:

1. A black cloth Cambridge gown for the degree of Master, with a hood of black silk lined throughout with silk the colour of the degree and edged to a depth of 5 cm with gold silk (BCC 114); black cloth trencher cap.
2. Where two colours are named, the hood is lined with the first colour and edged 5 cm with the second; the second is inside the hood only and lies inside the gold. The neckband is lined with the first.

(17) Bachelor:

1. A black cloth Cambridge gown worn by graduates holding the degree of Bachelor, with a hood of black silk lined to a depth of 15 cm with silk the colour of the degree and edged to a depth of 4 cm with gold silk (BCC 114); black cloth trencher cap.
2. Where two colours are named, the hood is lined to a depth of 15 cm with the first and edged 4 cm with the second; the second is inside the hood only and lies inside the gold. The neckband is lined with the first.

(18) Graduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate and sub-Bachelor Degrees:

1. A black gown worn by graduates holding the degree of Bachelor of the University, black cloth trencher cap, gold cloth stole (BCC 114) of width 10 cm and total length 2.5 m with distinguishing colours for level of award arranged as follows:
   1. Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma: two 13 mm satin ribbons in the distinguishing colour or colours running the length of the stole, the first being 1 cm from the outside edge and the second 1 cm from the first.
   2. Certificate/Diploma/Advanced Diploma: one 13 mm satin ribbon in the distinguishing colour or colours running the length of the stole being 1 cm from the outside edge.
   3. Associate Diploma/Associate Degree: 13 mm horizontal satin ribbon in the distinguishing colour or colours running edge to edge, 30 cm from inside edge of mitre.
2. Where two colours are named, they shall each be 6.5 mm wide and in the case of the Associate Diploma the first shall be above the second. In all other cases the first shall be nearest the outside edge of the stole.

(19) Undergraduate members of the University who attend graduation ceremonies and formal occasions where academic dress is specified are required to wear a bottle green (BCC 25) or black cloth gown and a black cloth trencher cap.

(20) Graduate members of the University who attend graduation ceremonies and formal occasions where Academic Dress is specified are required to wear the Academic Dress appropriate to the member's qualifications. Where the qualifications were completed at an institution other than the University of New England, the member may wear either the Academic Dress of that institution or the University of New England Academic Dress as appropriate to their highest qualification.

(21) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Stole:

1. Staff and students of an Indigenous background may choose to wear, in addition to their Academic Dress, a stole that most appropriately reflects their cultural heritage. There are three types of stole provided:
   1. for students identifying as Aboriginal, the design incorporating the Aboriginal flag colours;
   2. for students identifying as Torres Strait Islander, the design incorporating the Torres Strait Islander flag colours;
   3. for students identifying with both communities, the design incorporating both cultural versions.

(22) Trencher Caps and Bonnets:

1. Any Graduand may, for religious or other reasons, seek exemption from the requirement to wear the stipulated headwear from the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Innovation).

(23) Holders of More than One Degree:

1. Graduates holding more than one degree are required to wear the Academic Dress appropriate for the award being conferred at their graduation ceremony. Graduands having multiple awards recognised at a single ceremony are required to wear Academic Dress appropriate to the highest award.

Authority and Compliance

(24) The Procedure Administrator, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Innovation), pursuant to the Academic Dress Rule, makes these procedures.

(25) UNE Representatives and Students must observe these procedures in relation to University matters.

(26) These procedures operate as and from the Effective Date.

(27) Previous procedures relating to the Academic Dress are replaced and have no further operation from the Effective Date of this procedure.

Section 4 - Definitions

(28) Cambridge Bachelor/Master/Doctoral Pattern means a graduation gown of black cloth, cut in the same pattern and style as graduates holding a degree of Bachelor/Master/Doctor from the University of Cambridge.
