Section 1 - Scope

(1) Research has been defined as the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. In the supervision of Higher Degree Research (HDR) Students, the draft Australian Government's Threshold Standards for Research and Research Training require that a Principal Supervisor holds a doctoral degree or has equivalent research experience is active in research and is publishing in a relevant field or discipline.

(2) While there is a diverse range in norms for research and publication activity across disciplines, this document provides a general set of guidelines as to what minimum research and publication activity is required of staff who undertake the role of Principal Supervisor at UNE.

(3) As a guide, to be regarded as active in research and publication, for the purposes identified above, a continuing academic staff member at Level B or above on a minimum 0.4 appointment is likely to have achieved both the following criteria (A and B) over the last 5 years.

Section 2 - Guidelines

Part A — Publication Outputs

(4) At least 5 points for publications and outputs of which they are the author or a co-author that satisfy the eligibility requirements of the ERA research classification found at: (Click here)

  1. Authored Book (5 points)
  2. Chapter in an Edited Book (1 point)
  3. Edited Book (1 point)
  4. Refereed Journal Article (1 point)
  5. Refereed Conference Paper (1 point)
  6. Non-Traditional Research Output (NTRO) e.g. creative work (1 point)

(5) The publication and output points in this UNE definition are in line with weightings determined by ERA but are NOT pro-rated based on the number of authors i.e. each author scores the respective points.

(6) For a staff member on a fractional appointment, or who is an early career researcher or has had career interruptions, then the output defaults to a prorated average of 1 point per year per full time equivalent.

Part B — Other Research Measures

(7) At least 2 of the following other research activity measures:

  1. ERA-recognised grant application submission as chief investigator.
  2. Supervision of HDR students.
  3. Participation in discipline/professional/School research activities.
