Chancellor's Doctoral Research Medal Procedures

Section 1 - Overview

(1) Chancellor's Doctoral Research Medals provides a mechanism for the University of New England to recognise student achievement in research and raise the profile of the research being successfully undertaken. Recognition of high achieving Doctoral graduates is important in raising the aspirations of all students, improving the range of employment destinations and acknowledging the importance of quality doctoral completions to the University's research outcomes.

(2) These procedures outline the basis for awarding of Chancellor's Doctoral Research Medals, and should be read in conjunction with the University Medals Policy.

Section 2 - Scope

(3) Chancellor's Doctoral Research Medals are awarded for excellence in the University of New England Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Industries/Professions theses or research portfolios. The Medals will be given for doctoral research that is of exceptional merit and at the forefront of the field.

Section 3 - Procedures

Eligibility

(4) Candidates, eligible for shortlisting, have met the following:

  1. Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Industries/Professions students, conferred since the previous awarding of Medals.
  2. At least two thesis examiners have recommended the award of a Medal and have provided an approximately 250-word statement supporting the recommendation.

Criteria

(5) The Academic Board Higher Degree Research Examination Subcommittee will decide on the Medals to be awarded each year. Considerations in determining the quality of the theses are:

  1. International standing of the research work;
  2. Impact of the research both actual and potential;
  3. Refereed publications or other research outputs from the doctoral work, for example patents, exhibitions, performances and other creative works;
  4. Awards or other recognition of the research quality.

(6) The evidence to be used will include:

  1. Examiners reports and the nominating examiners' statements.
  2. Supporting statement addressing the criteria and other quality measures from the Supervisor(s).

Graduation Ceremony

(7) There shall be up to four Chancellor's Doctoral Research Medals awarded per year at the autumn graduation ceremonies and up to two Medals awarded per year at the spring graduation ceremonies to doctoral students, conferred since the previous awarding of Medals.

Appeals

(8) Chancellor's Doctoral Research Medals are a discretionary award by the University for outstanding academic merit. There is no appeal against decisions that confer or do not confer a Medal. Review of the decision-making process may be provided by the UNE or NSW Ombudsman.
